Built, hand painted, panel lined, decaled and matte coated.
My dad visited a local hobby shop and asked me if I wanted a kit. I asked if they had the Infinite Justice Type II, and gave me a picture of either the Immortal Justice and the Gelgoog Menace. I opted for the Gelgoog Menace, and I eventually found the IJ Type II at another hobby store.
I don’t know what to think about this kit. I think it’s pretty solid and I put quite a bit of effort into making it look nice, but even after everything I’m just kinda mellow about it—the design is not my favorite, nor do I find it bad, it’s just whelming.Â
The build is quite simple, but the nub marks can get pretty nasty since they’re thick, they’re placed in odd places, and being dark pieces it needs good clean up. Like the Shi-ve.A, the kit requires a lot of color correcting to do and the stickers are huge. I used most of them since I hate using white paint (which I still had to use anyway for the back thrusters), and my god it’s especially egregious with the backpack with the wings just being black out of the box. Since the wings are pretty thin, I wouldn’t see how the other colors wouldn’t be stickers, but I wish the stickers were slightly oversized just so it can cover the edges better.
Of course as I do with all my HG kits, I did quite a bit of hand painting, mostly just color correcting the rest of the kit that aren’t covered by the provided stickers and a few additions here and there. I unfortunately didn’t couldn’t find a color close to the lavender purple that is used inside the thrusters, so I went ahead and just painted them red. I used a lot of Vallejo US Dark Gray, and instead of using white paint for the guns, I used Vallejo Steel instead. After painting, I panel lined the kit, added generic caution decals from Delpi Decal to spice up the kit a bit and did a flat coat for the cherry on top.
With everything said and done, the kit didn’t look that much different than I expected and I was still kinda whatever on its looks. Regarding posing the kit—it’s thick, so you can definitely feel the bulk hindering its movement. It’s kinda hard to get the kit standing with its feet firmly planted due to the design of the feet being weird and being blocked by its ankle armor, and the waist and head are kinda hard to rotate around due not having much space to do so. The shoulders get in the way of the wings spreading all the way out, as well as them not being able to angle up due to the static wing flaps being in the way, and while it can hold its ranged weapons well, it can’t hold their beam halberd in place, which got quite annoying. I also left the shield on most of the time because its design of being folded looks wack, and I cracked one of them while trying to disassemble the halves.
All in all, the Gelgoog Menace is an okay kit. It’s a design that actually doesn’t live up to its original counterpart despite being very flashy, and even after putting quite a bit of work on it, I’m still very eh about it. Anyway, I’m definitely building the IJ Type II next. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you later!
